Bizzarro schools, then WINS the ABA East Coast National

Continuing to expand its already legendary status as the most diverse BMX team on the planet, Bizzarro set on this year on a “mini” Southern sprint time tour.Departing from Cape Cod on Wednesday April 23rd, we (Shawn DiPrete, Rennen’s George Costa, Pam Oldham, and myself) made the trek down to Spartanburg, South Carolina.
After a few shifts on the helm and a few catnaps in the aft berthing area of the SS Bizzarro Bus, we arrived in the Dirty South. After some Waffle House we sessioned our secret Southern training grounds in Gastonia, NC. We then continued on to Spartanburg where after some more grub and showers we were ready to check out the Supercross BMX track.

We met up with Doc Shade, track director, walked the track then set up camp for Clinic sign-ups. 20 plus eager riders came out to attend the clinic and we had a blast teaching the kids. As an added bonus, the Spartanburg clinic got to ride with and learn from ABA’s Number One Pro Danny Caluag then most got an autograph under the FLY tarp to end the session.Unfortunately the clinic crew needed to be 8 hours north at 11 am the following morning for our second of two tour clinics. We unloaded a good portion of the trailer and left supplies for the ABA Bizzarro team squad. After refueling the body at Outback and showering up at the Sneakers in Charlotte, we pulled a second catnap and drove all night up to Woodbridge, VA for the NBL Freedom National pre-race clinic.

On Friday 25 plus excited BMXers came out to join us at our mid day seminar and once again we received raved reviews afterwards. After a few laps of practice it was finally time for a HOTEL ROOM.

Back in South Carolina on Saturday, Bizzarro had a full squad in effect for Factory Team racing competition. Women’s pro Kayla Gaddis ran the effort and things got off to a slow start for the weekend. 8 Expert and new “camp ad” poster boy Erik Meyer won his class as did Melissa Woodruff in a combined ladies cruiser class on day 1. Second place for the day in team comp left something to strive for on day 2.Gaddis then spent the evening strategizing with teammates Tom Gonzalez and Rob McAllister and it paid off, as Kayla took the Women’s Pro win on day 2 AND Rob took the win in 41-45 cruiser! Alex Frey pulled a 2nd in 14 x with semi’s to actually outscore Melissa’s day two win and Erik won 9 x again for a weekend double. With all those awesome scores to work with Bizzarro took the day 2 Factory Team win with a 184!

Alex Frey workin it in 14x

In Woodbridge, VA the team effort didn’t fare as well even though Susie Levan scored a weekend perfect in Ladies Cruiser. Shawn DiPrete scored the win in 35-39 cruiser on Day 2 and Chris Meaker reeled in two seconds in 35-40 expert. M.J. Peters (19-25x) and I (35-39 cruiser) were unable to put together a good enough run in either of our mains to help the team sheets place. We did score an 80 on day 1, which threw away a 79 we have from earlier in the season to advance us one point in the year-end standings.

Coming up in May Bizzarro will have the full dog and pony show set up in Howell, New Jersey for NBL National Team competition and a Clinic. On the 24th we’ll put on a clinic at the new Ducktown, TN ABA track and we’ll end the month with Factory Team competition at the ABA York PA national.
