Riders involved in
the picture, closest to you is Derrick Johnson, far outside is Matt
Dean, and yours truly is in the middle. Derrick
was a member of the Columbia bikes
factory team in 1986, before becoming a member of Bizzarro in 1995.
Yes, Derrick is actually riding a Columbia frame, made, if I remember
correctly, in
Westfield or Springfield Mass. Matt was riding a Powerlight, long before
the days
of the GT buy out. Matt was also rocking a Crit Plate, witch everyone
had back in those
days.
I was riding a custom painted Hutch "Hollywood" frame, with
Profile forks. Custom home
made Bizzarro bike pad kit, and a Hadley bottom bracket. I of course
didn't run a Crit Plate,
cause I always had to be a rebel. I was on my 2nd or 3rd Hollywood
frame, they were my
favorite as long as I repainted them. I also had broom stick handles in
the end of my GT bars
to make them wider, and if you look at my hands, there all the way to
the end of the grips.
I could never ride that way now a days. Don't ask me why, it's just
something everyone was
doing back then.
As you can tell by looking at Matt and Myself, Visor Risers were all the
rage in those
days also, and if you look closely at my seat post, we kept those
puppies high back in the
day.
Oddly enough, I always
here guys on the current Bizzarro team talk about "The Rock",
and
how they used to race there. Guys like Decouto, Cambio, and
DiPrete, but to tell
you the truth, I didn't know of a one of them back then. I guess it was
because I was a
Connecticut local, and was viewed as an outsider when riding in the RI
state series.
Rocky Hill held an NBL National in the summer of 1984, I was a 14
Novice. I remember pros
like Ronnie Anderson, Greg Hill, the Patterson brothers, etc.... all
racing that flat track. Weird.
