NBL Constitution Classic National
Currier wins Elite Open Day 1
Bizzarro was back on the NBL scene, this time in Trumbull Connecticut on the weekend of July 7th and 8th. Working off our abbreviated schedule and roster the NBL team battle is getting tight as we head towards the Grinds with just one more stop to make.

Team Finish:

Only THREE National teams dared enter the fray in Trumbull, and frankly who could blame them. Day 1 end with a one-point separation between all three teams as Felt won with an 84, while OFR and us tied for second with an 84. Thanks to the keen NBL rules board, the same board that killed Female pro racing in 2007, there is no team money for second place with only three teams signed up. Like I said in my last report, I don’t think highly of either sanction. Day two saw OFR “kill it” with a 90. Maybe now they can get some “photos in the magazine”. Felt pulled an 81 and we brought up the rear with an 80. Both scores actually upped our overall by 7 points, now hopefully we can pick up most of the 13 points we trail Unbound at Pottstown to make things interesting in Louisville.
Team Riders:
Allen Currier (Elite Open) Connecticut is where Allen calls home and although he hasn’t ridden Trumbull much this season he sure made it look like he does everyday. On day 1 Allen made up for a bad gate by passing four riders down straights two and three, setting him up in third place entering the last turn. Just the right place for him to strike when Joey the bomb and Phil D bumped battling for the lead exiting turn three. Phil unclipped and Joey was no match for Allen and his Kong gym strengthened last straight pull as he passed the Bomb at the stripe. Day two was not as dramatic as Allen had a great gate and only had to pass Joey Albright to take a second behind the Bomb. It must have been Allen’s new THE helmet that made such a difference!?!?
Davey Maltezos (30-34 Expert) Dave made the debut to his 2nd BMX comeback in Trumbull, and this time I think we’ll see him back for more much sooner. “It must be the shoes Mars” Clipped in and battling teammate Dave Bedford for a win on day 1 and a 2nd on day 2 behind Bedford.

Maltezos (L) and Bedfrd battle down the second straight at Trumbull on day 2.

Courtney Applewhite (15 Girls) Courtney came North to do battle in Trumbull and she simply dominated the class with two big wins.

Austin Loebe (14 Expert) Austin rode unbelievably fast and smooth in Trumbull, unfortunately Jake Sherbno showed up and rained on his parade. On day 2 those two had almost a whole straight lead on the other 6 riders in the main event, simply incredible!
Alex Frey (13 Expert) Much like Austin, Alex rode great at his first ever NBL race taking two 2nds in 13 X, but Jordan Ryan showed up and x’ed up in his face. Look for Alex to return to NBL racing at Pottstown and for someone else to accidentally fall in practice sometime soon.
Jason Bush (15-16 cruiser) Whacker did his best to try to get us the team win on Day 1 by not backing down and taking the win in his cruiser main. Not bad for having just put his new Podium cruiser together that morning!
Susie Levan (Jimmy’s sister, errrrr I mean 35-39 cruiser) Susie showed why she has that #1 on her plate on day 1 with a dominating win over the Ladies combined cruiser class.

Facility:

As some of you may have heard this was a rather small national and now I know what the West Coast NBL teams feel like trying to get high team scores for their overall finish with NO BONUS points to work with. We’re all entitled to our own opinions and frankly mine as usual is very blunt, but then again I have never in my 24 years of racing seen a national DROP 22 moto’s from day one to day two. So apparently I am not the only one who found the NBL’s new track builder to be a little “green around the edges”. Riding the track was not my beef, as it was for the many youngsters who left, I was big enough and smart enough to ride the track competitively. But the drop in moto and rider counts REALLY killed our chances of getting a great team score and that really, well just add your expletives here.
